Friday 6 June Departures from 12.35pm
COOL CLEAR WATER - Waingake Water Treatment Plant Gisborne's water supply is sourced from three dams and a bush catchment located approximately 40 km south of Gisborne. The water is treated on site at the plant and then piped to reservoirs within Gisborne. In 2007 the team running the plant were awarded the inaugural NZWWA Operations Award acknowledging their professional approach as a motivated team committed to producing high quality. This award was selected from all operator teams throughout NZ. This tour will include the treatment plant and the transfer pipeline. SLIP SLIDING AWAY - Tarndale Slip Sponsored by QRS This natural phenomenon, located approximately 70km northwest of Gisborne, is one of the largest examples of fluvial and mass movement in New Zealand and covers some 50 hectares. Material from the slip has raised the bed of the river below by some 30 metres. Tarndale Road traversed the divide across the top of the slip, with the ground dropping away on each side, however maintaining this access was too difficult and it has been abandoned. CHATTANOOGA CHOO CHOO - WA 165 Steam Locomotive Restoration Sponsored by Humes WA 165 was built in Dunedin early in the twentieth century and served on the now defunct Gisborne to Motu line until the late 1950’s. For many years after that the engine featured in the local children’s playground where it slowly decayed. Rescued by a band of steam train enthusiasts the engine has been lovingly restored back to pristine condition. Attention to detail and authenticity have been hallmarks of this restoration process which included design and fabrication of a new boiler. Hear about the restoration process from a local enthusiast and ride the train to Muriwai for afternoon tea. THE DOCK OF THE BAY - Tolaga Bay Wharf TOUR FULL This wharf was built in the early 1900's to ship wool and meat out of the Tolaga area. It is the longest wharf structure in New Zealand, and the longest open ocean wharf in the southern hemisphere. Since its commercial function ceased in the late 1950's the wharf has slowly deteriorated. The GDC inherited the structure in the amalgamations in the eighties but was not able to undertake significant repairs due to funding constraints. About ten years later some locals set up a Trust to help raise funds and between 2001 and 2006 council has implemented two successive contracts in which almost half of the pile bents have been strengthened using two different methods. SWING LOW - Golf Sponsored by Gisborne branch Downer EDI Works Golf at the Poverty Bay Golf Club. This is a great links golf course with undulating fairways and high quality greens.
