OPTIONAL TOUR - PACIFIC HIGHWAY TOUR 25 minutes north of Gisborne along the scenic Pacific Coast Highway, with its sweeping surf beaches and great vistas, to Whangara for a guided tour of the place The Whale Rider was filmed. Lunch on the Marae then further up the coast to the historic Tolaga Bay Wharf, the longest wharf on the East Coast, completed in 1929. Visit the Tolaga Bay Cashmere Company for a tour and retail therapy if required. OPTIONAL TOUR - SCENIC SOUTH TOUR Heading south to Mahia, a scenic stop at the Wharerata Look Out, then on to Morere Springs for a walk in the native rain forest and / or a dip in the natural hot pools. An enlighting tour at the Nuhaka Aqua Culture paua farm and shop. Lunch at the beautiful Mahia Café, overlooking Mahia Beach. Quick stop enroute back to Gisborne for a tasting at Miltons Organic Winery. OPTIONAL TOUR - MOTU BUSH WALK A 90 minute drive inland to historic Motu area. A two hour flat walk guided by Frank Murphy, once a professional hunter, now a fishing guide and expert on the local region. Frank will talk about the history of the area and give an enlightening and interesting narration on the ancient use of plants for medicinal purposes in the pre European days. Escorted and narrated by James Blackburne, Historic Places Trust Tairawhiti branch chairman, highlights include the Cook Landing Site National Historic Reserve, Matawhero Church, Manatuki as well as homesteads in the cbd. OPTIONAL TOUR - TAKITIMU CRUISE A short walk to the wharf to board and enjoy a cruise on the lovingly restored MV. Takitimu. See Gisborne City from an off shore perspective. OPTIONAL TOUR - WEST TO EASTWOOD A 30 minute drive from the city through picturesque Ngatapa Valley is The National Aboretum of New Zealand, Eastwood Arboretum, the country’s largest exotic tree collection boasting over 4,000 different trees, shrubs and climbers. A one hour guided walking tour to build your appetite for a picnic lunch. Stop for a wine taste on the way back to the Hotel.
