The Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (DSEWPaC) is responsible for implementing the Australian Government’s policies to protect our environment and heritage, and to promote a sustainable way of life.

The department’s focus on the Australian urban environment covers a range of issues including hazardous waste, fuel quality, ozone depleting substances, synthetic greenhouse gases and waste oil, air quality, contaminated sites, used packaging, and controlled wastes.

The department seeks to protect and improve ambient air quality through national action to reduce emissions of major air pollutants. National action relates to the implementation of relevant national standards and strategies, a common approach to monitoring air quality, research to inform air quality policy and community education on air quality issues.

The department also manages Australia’s National Pollutant Inventory (NPI), a publicly accessible database containing information on sources, types and amounts of 93 pollutants emitted to the Australian environment.
